Latest library initiative puts seeds on the shelves
The latest initiative from Waimate District Library is encouraging people to grow their own plants, save seeds and share them with others in the community.

The library launched its new Seed Library on September 12, with vegetable, herb, flower and native plant seeds available for a gold coin donation.
The Seed Library is the latest addition to Waimate’s new library, which opened in late 2024 with dedicated spaces for children and young people, a technology hub, public computers and free Wi-Fi.
The library has continued to expand its activities and services since opening, with the Seed Library the latest addition.
Senior Librarian Tony Morton said the idea came from seeing what other libraries were offering and considering whether something similar could work in Waimate.
“We were looking at ways we can connect with the community, but also that got the community connecting together. This ticked all the boxes.”
The response on launch day was strong.
“We had a huge day on Saturday. Our door count was more than double what we would normally have.”
The seeds are housed in a purpose-built box made by the Waimate MenzShed. People can choose a packet for a gold coin donation, which helps cover costs, and seed donations are also welcomed.
The aim is for gardeners to grow the seeds, harvest new seeds and donate some back for others to use.
Saving seeds can reduce the cost of gardening and help preserve plant varieties, while seeds collected from successful plants can be grown and shared again.
The library has also produced basic guidelines on saving seeds to take home and points gardeners towards resources including New Zealand Seed Savers for more information.
