One deck for morning coffee, another for evenings outside

To access the network of tracks and trails in the hills above Waimate, you take Point Bush Road.

Aside from the walkers, runners and bikers, it’s a quiet road. No close neighbours but still in town.

If you’ve been up that way, you will have noticed number 126.

Dark, sleek, and jutting out over a large elevated section - it stands out.

It’s currently on the market, and we were lucky enough to take a look around and chat with the owners. They designed the home themselves, with a lot of thought put into how it actually works day to day.

A home to enjoy

What you don’t see from the road is how liveable it is.

For all its clean, modern lines, this is a house that feels comfortable the minute you’re in it.

Built in 2022 by Hayden Tait Building, a local firm that specialises in managing projects like this. The owners brought years of experience designing homes, and it shows. A lot of thought has gone into how the house works day to day.

There are two decks. Mornings start on the east-facing one. Coffee in the sun before heading up the hill - a walk, a run, or a quick ride on the tracks just up the road.

Then, the covered west-facing deck is set up for long evenings outside and entertaining.

A reading nook is tucked into the living area, with a slightly lower ceiling - a “good chill out spot”, as the owners describe it.

The interior design is flawless, the finishings are high quality - it’s ready to just enjoy.

Built for all seasons

The house was carefully oriented on the site to capture all-day sun, with floor to ceiling windows letting light in.

There’s plenty of storage too, both inside and out. Room for all the big toys - bikes, a boat, the caravan. Which is handy because the Waitaki Lakes are just up the road - it’s where Waimate heads for summer, close enough for day trips boating.

In winter, the log burner becomes the centre of the house - something to come back to after a day out. The ski fields of the Mackenzie are also an easy day trip away.

The section meets the brief

One of the house's interesting features is the overhang.

Part of the living room juts out as the ground slopes away. The owners wanted an elevated outlook from one side of the living room while still being able to step straight out onto the ground from other sides.

They developed the sloping section to fit that brief, and it’s a hit with the grandkids.

The grounds are low maintenance with areas of native plantings. The hard work’s been done, the new owners can entertain and enjoy it.

Attention to detail

The team at Hayden Tait Building “thoroughly enjoyed constructing this beautiful high-spec home”.

They worked closely with the owners and share the same meticulous eye for detail. The collaboration ensured every aspect of the build was completed to an exceptional standard.

According to Hayden they put a lot into the details.

"It’s what we do and it finishes a place off properly and it's what the new owners will notice and enjoy."

This team have a reputation for high quality results, including farm and commercial buildings as well as high-end homes, but this one stuck out.

“There is something very special about this property, the house design fits into the landscape seamlessly with stunning ocean views. This one wasn’t your standard build. It’s the sort of project you enjoy as a builder - working with the design and the site to get it right”.

Location, affordability and lifestyle

More people are choosing to call Waimate home.

It’s partly because of the location. You’re roughly halfway between Christchurch and Dunedin, with the Mackenzie and the Waitaki Lakes on your doorstep. Wanaka and Queenstown are an easy weekend option.

You also get more for your money here, so people are downsizing, or leaving bigger centres and moving here for the laid back village lifestyle.

Which brings us to the lifestyle.

The weekend farmers market, great places to eat, the art gallery, tracks and trails, shops, a supermarket, and a few good vintage stores - just down the road.

If you’re looking for a standout property, where all the hard work’s been done and it’s been built with lifestyle in mind, take a closer look at 126 Point Bush Road.
