New chair steps in at Waimate Art Society

The Waimate Art Society has a new chair, with local photographer Tiffany Ottley stepping into the role.

Ottley says she’s looking forward to building on the work of previous chairs and committee members, and continuing to grow what is already a well-supported creative community.

“There is already such a strong foundation and supportive creative community here in Waimate,” she says.

From member to chair

Ottley has been part of the Art Society for several years, regularly entering the photography section of the annual exhibition.

“For me it’s been a wonderful opportunity to share my photography with the community and connect with people who appreciate creative work,” she says.

Her involvement with the society, and its support for a wide range of art forms, encouraged her to step into a leadership role.

“I really enjoy being part of a group that supports all forms of art, whether it’s painting, photography, sculpture or mixed media.”

A busy gallery

The gallery, located just up the road from the popular Waimate Bakery, has seen a noticeable lift in visitors, with more foot traffic and sales over weekends.

It comes as more people spend time in town, drawn to Waimate’s village lifestyle - calling into the local farmers market, exploring the tracks and trails, catching up with friends and browsing the shops, including the op shops the town is known for.

What’s coming up

A number of initiatives are already planned for the year ahead.

The gallery will host guest artists, bringing new work and fresh ideas into the space. Plans are also in place to further develop the courtyard as an area for people to gather and experience art.

The annual Art Society exhibition in September remains a key event on the calendar, showcasing work from across the region.

The society will also host the Waimate High School art exhibition on October 17, providing a platform for young artists.

Workshops and learning opportunities are also in the pipeline, giving people the chance to try new techniques and build their skills.

A space for everyone

At the heart of it, Ottley says the focus is simple - creating a place where art is accessible and shared.

“For me, it’s about helping create a space where creativity can be shared, supported and enjoyed by the whole community.”

Ottley says the society is keen to hear from local businesses and sponsors interested in supporting the arts.

“We’re keen to connect with local businesses and sponsors who would like to support the arts and be part of what we’re building at the gallery.”

Spaces like the art gallery are playing a key role in the town’s growing weekend appeal, giving people another reason to spend time in Waimate.
